The 3 Day Mount Meru Trek is an exciting and rewarding adventure to the summit of Mount Meru (4,566m), Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Located within the spectacular Arusha National Park, this trek combines breathtaking scenery, rich wildlife, lush montane forests, and dramatic volcanic landscapes into one unforgettable experience.
Although shorter than the traditional 4 day itinerary, the 3 day trek is designed for trekkers with a good level of fitness who are looking for a more challenging ascent. The route follows the same scenic trail, staying in comfortable mountain huts while providing incredible views of the Meru Crater, the Ash Cone, the Great Rift Valley, and, on clear mornings, the snow capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
One of the unique highlights of Mount Meru is that all trekkers are accompanied by an armed park ranger, as the lower slopes are home to free roaming wildlife including giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elephants, warthogs, antelopes, monkeys, and hundreds of bird species.
Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate, where you’ll complete registration before meeting your mountain guide, porters, cook, and armed park ranger. The trek starts across open grasslands where wildlife is frequently seen grazing peacefully. Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, bushbucks, warthogs, and colorful birds are common along the trail, making Mount Meru one of the few mountains in the world where trekking and wildlife viewing go hand in hand. The route then enters the lush montane rainforest filled with giant fig trees, moss covered trunks, waterfalls, and tropical vegetation. Along the way, you’ll pass the scenic Mayo Falls, an ideal place for a short break and photographs.
After a gradual climb, arrive at Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll settle into your accommodation and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner while surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the forest.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) – Saddle Hut (3,570m) – Socialist Peak (4,566m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
After an early breakfast, begin the ascent toward Saddle Hut, climbing steadily through heath and moorland with spectacular views of the Meru Crater, the Ash Cone, and the surrounding plains.
A short break at Saddle Hut allows time to rest and prepare for the final summit climb. From here, continue over rocky ridges toward Rhino Point before following the dramatic crater rim to the summit. Reaching Socialist Peak (4,566m) rewards climbers with breathtaking panoramic views across the Great Rift Valley, Arusha National Park, and, on clear days, the majestic glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin the long descent back to Saddle Hut for a well deserved meal before continuing downhill through the forest to Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend your final night on the mountain. Although this is the most demanding day of the trek, it offers an unforgettable combination of volcanic scenery, high altitude adventure, and spectacular summit views.

Day 3: Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) – Momella Gate (1,500m)
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the beautiful forests of Arusha National Park. Morning light filters through the towering trees while birds sing overhead and wildlife may once again be seen grazing along the trail.
As the trail descends into the open grasslands, enjoy one last opportunity to admire the rich biodiversity that makes Mount Meru unique.Upon reaching Momella Gate, you’ll complete the park exit formalities and receive your official Mount Meru Summit Certificate, recognizing your successful ascent of Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Before departing, your trekking crew will gather for a traditional farewell celebration with songs and congratulations. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a hot shower, comfortable accommodation, and time to celebrate your incredible achievement.
