Your adventure begins with a flight toward Gombe Stream National Park, a spectacular forested park located along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Gombe is internationally famous for its wild chimpanzees and its connection to pioneering chimpanzee research and conservation. Trek through the lush forest accompanied by experienced park trackers as you search for chimpanzee communities moving through their natural habitat.
The journey then continues to Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and wildlife-rich parks. Katavi is particularly famous for enormous buffalo herds, large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, lions, and other wildlife gathering around the park’s rivers and seasonal water sources.
Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam – Fly to Gombe Stream National Park
Upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, you will be welcomed by your safari representative and assisted with your scheduled domestic flight arrangements toward Western Tanzania. Continue by flight toward the Gombe Stream area, followed by a boat transfer across the spectacular waters of Lake Tanganyika to reach the national park. The boat journey itself is a memorable introduction to Western Tanzania, with beautiful views of the lake, forested mountains, and surrounding shoreline. Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking – Gombe Stream National Park
After an early breakfast, begin your chimpanzee trekking adventure inside Gombe Stream National Park. Accompanied by experienced park guides and trackers, enter the dense forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. Your trek takes you through beautiful woodland trails, steep forested slopes, and streams while your guides listen for chimpanzee calls and track their movements. Once the chimpanzees are located, spend time observing them from a respectful distance as they feed, climb trees, groom one another, communicate, and interact within their social groups. This close encounter with wild chimpanzees is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences.

Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Day 3: Gombe – Fly to Katavi National Park – Game Drive
After breakfast, transfer by boat across Lake Tanganyika and continue to the airstrip for your scheduled flight toward Katavi National Park. Upon arrival, meet your professional safari guide and begin your first game drive through this remote wilderness. Katavi’s vast floodplains, seasonal rivers, woodland, and grassland provide an ideal habitat for enormous concentrations of wildlife. Search for large buffalo herds, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and other antelope species.
During the dry season, wildlife congregates around the remaining water sources, creating spectacular opportunities to observe predator-prey interactions and large groups of animals sharing the same waterholes.
