4 Days Mount Meru Trekking Adventure
Discover Tanzania’s Hidden Gem A Spectacular Journey to Socialist Peak (4,566m)
Trekking Highlight
Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of East Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations. Located within the breathtaking Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers an unforgettable combination of wildlife, lush forests, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and panoramic summit views.
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru is regarded as one of Africa’s finest trekking experiences. The mountain provides excellent acclimatization for those preparing to climb Kilimanjaro while offering a unique adventure in its own right. Trekkers pass through diverse ecological zones, encounter wildlife roaming freely below the trail, and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the summit on clear mornings. Unlike Kilimanjaro, every Mount Meru trek is accompanied by an armed park ranger, ensuring safe passage through areas inhabited by buffalo, giraffes, elephants, zebras, warthogs, and other wildlife.
Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
Your Mount Meru adventure begins with a morning drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, located inside Arusha National Park. After completing registration formalities, you’ll meet your professional mountain guide, porters, and armed park ranger before starting the trek. The trail gently ascends through open grasslands where wildlife sightings are common. It is not unusual to encounter herds of giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, bushbucks, warthogs, and various antelope species grazing peacefully near the trail. Numerous colorful birds, including turacos and hornbills, make this section especially rewarding for bird enthusiasts.
As the trail enters the lush montane forest, towering fig trees, giant ferns, moss covered trunks, and crystal clear streams create a peaceful atmosphere. Along the way, you’ll pass the beautiful Mayo Falls, where you may stop briefly to admire the cascading water.

On clear days, the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro appears majestically on the eastern horizon.
